Biography
Eugene Nakamura, born 1985 in Windsor, Canada, began playing violin at the age of 4 and a half. He made his solo debut with orchestra when he was 9, and his first solo recital when he was 13 at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. He has made engagements with orchestras such as the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and the Windsor Symphony and has given recitals in Canada, Japan and the UK. His performances have been broadcast on Canadian national radio and television. A passionate chamber musician, in 2002 he was awarded the Orford String Quartet Scholarship from the Ontario Arts Council Foundation.
His teachers include Nora Chastain (UdK Berlin, Germany), Vladimir Landsman (Montreal, Canada) and Wen Zhou Li (RNCM, Manchester UK). He has also received masterclasses from world-renowned artists such as Pinchas Zukerman, Maxim Vengerov, Vadim Repin, Ivry Gitlis, and Pamela Frank.
In 2010, Eugene was a finalist and prizewinner at the 7th Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition in Vienna. He has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions starting at a young age. He won the grand prize at the Canadian Music Competitions at the age of 10, and again the following year. He won first prize at the 62nd OSM Competition in Montreal in November 2001, along with the audience prize and the prize for the best interpretation of a Canadian work. In November 2002 at the Long-Thibault International Competition in Paris, France, he was awarded the Prix Association Samson François – Scarbo for outstanding musicianship. In June 2007 he was a semi-finalist at the Micheal Hill International Competition in New Zealand.
Eugene is Principal Second Violin at the Munich Radio Orchestra (Münchner Rundfunkorchester), having started at the orchestra as Associate Principal in 2016. He was previously Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Hannover State Opera, and has been invited as guest principal by orchestras such as the Bavarian State Opera, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Hamburg Symphony Orchestra.
